Two primary ground improvement types were highlighted: aggregate piers (stone columns) and rigid inclusions (concrete/grout columns). Aggregate piers are suitable for light to medium loads in fill or sandy soils, enhancing bearing capacity and controlling settlement. Rigid inclusions are necessary when soils have organic or soft layers, or for more heavily loaded structures with greater settlement control needs.<br /><br />Case studies demonstrated appropriate selection of methods based on site conditions, emphasizing that ground improvement is not universally applicable. An example of a wall failure in New Jersey illustrated risks if unsuitable fill material and ground improvement techniques are improperly used.<br /><br />The session concluded with a Q&A addressing topics such as report currency (ideally within 5–7 years), karst mapping, deep foundation scenarios, and challenges unique to coastal or linear projects. Attendees were encouraged to utilize IMUA’s online learning resources. The webinar underscored the significance of thorough geotechnical understanding and experienced contractors to mitigate construction risk.
